no hot water at home

Call it a first world problem, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who enjoys taking a cold shower. Unfortunately, most of us have experienced having no hot water, at some point, but how do we fix it if it happens? Here are some tips on common issues that you may allow you to fix the situation yourself.

It’s necessary to know, first, if you have an electric or gas water heater.

Gas Water Heaters:

  • Has the pilot light turned off? If so, you will need to relight it following the instructions in your owner’s manual. If the light will not stay lit, your gas inlet valve may have closed so try turning its’ handle to its correct position. This is usually parallel to the gas line, but can vary. If this still doesn’t work, you will need to call your gas company as you could have an issue with your thermocouple.

Electric Water Heaters:

  • Check to see if you have a tripped breaker, which would just mean that your water heater has a switch that has somehow been turned off. If this has occurred, you should be able to switch your circuit breaker from the “off” to “on” position to reset the breaker. If the breaker trips again shortly after you do this, it might be time to call an electrician to investigate the issue.
