Pets are an important part of our families. They are our running partners, cuddle buddies, and friends. We love our pets, but sometimes they can create some messes! Have you ever thought about how your plumbing can be affected by your pet? It’s not something we often think about but is important to take into consideration to keep your home and pet safe. Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, or a hamster, check out these 4 tips to pet-proof your plumbing.
1. Take bath time outside or use drain stoppers
No one wants a stinky pet! Bath time is an important part of taking care of your pet, but we all know our pets can shed. Stop your drains from getting clogged by taking precautions during your pet’s bath time. Prevent their hair from going down the drain by using a drain stopper in your sink and bathtub. Or save the pipes all together by bathing your pet outside.
2. Keep an eye on where your pup is digging
Dogs will be dogs, right? Some dogs love to dig! They don’t mean to cause damage to our yards and our plumbing, but it happens. Keep an eye on how deep your dog is digging holes. Some water and sewer lines might not be as far down as you think. If your pup hits a pipe while their digging, it could lead to an unwanted leak and a dent in your wallet.
3. Put the lid down
Did you know toilet water is harmful for our pets to drink? Toilet water has various chemicals and cleaners that can hurt our pets. If your pet is a toilet water drinker, its time to put the lid down and keep your pet safe. Make sure your pet always has fresh water to stay hydrated. It’s also important to keep the lid down if you have smaller adventurous critters that might fall into your toilet.
4. Don’t flush kitty litter
It’s important to take your cat’s kitty litter to the garbage and not the toilet. Although some brands say they are flushable, kitty litter can lead to serious clogs. Take the extra second to throw away your pet’s messes in the trash and not the toilet to save your pipes in the long run. Stop and think about what’s being flushed down your toilet.
