Clearing a Clogged Sink

For homeowners that prefer to do things themselves, plumbing may be one thing that remains for the professionals. Thankfully some urgent matters can be taken care of with the right mindset and tools. Slow draining or clogged sinks are one of these problems. Although this can be a symptom of a larger underlying issue, it doesn’t hurt to try a few things before you call a plumber.

1)    Drain Cleaner

Drain Cleaner is the easiest way to attempt clearing your clogged or slow draining sink. The Drain Cleaners that you can buy at the store use chemicals to lubricate the materials stuck in the drain. Since the mixture is heavier than water, even if you have standing water in your sink, the drain cleaner should be able to make it to the point of the blockage. Follow the directions on the packaging for best results.

2)    Plunging

Plunging your sink can be strenuous but it just might be the solution to your clogged drain. It requires some practice as well as some time. There are specific plungers designed for different drains. If you aren’t interested in purchasing a new plunger, your standard plunger should still work. If you aren’t comfortable with the idea of plunging your sink don’t be afraid to contact a plumber or try a different method.

3)    P-trap cleaning

Underneath the sink, where the pipe bends is called the P-Trap. Over time, materials can build up in this area and slow the draining of the sink, eventually clogging it. To unclog this section of pipe, place a bucket underneath the P-trap and unfasten it from the drainpipe and empty it out. Once it looks clear, reattach it and make sure it’s properly tightened. If this doesn’t help you may want to consider using a snake to clear more of the pipe. Most people prefer to have professional plumbers help with this because it requires more than your standard household tools.

4)    Kitchen Drains

If it’s your Kitchen drain which is draining slowly or clogged there are a few other tactics you can use. The first unique tactic is to remove as much standing water as possible and pour boiling hot water down the drain if it doesn’t seem to be helping you can try pouring salt into the drain first and then following it up with more boiling water.

The other kitchen specific tactic for clearing your clogged or slow draining sink is vinegar and baking soda. First, pour the baking soda into the drain and then follow it with the vinegar. This reaction between the two substances helps break through the organic material that is clogging your kitchen drains.

Hopefully, these tips can help you get your clogged or slow draining sinks draining properly without having to make a big deal out of it. Remember, it’s never a bad idea to call in a professional if you feel uncomfortable.
